2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Mixed Response
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that shift every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or consoles, but fans can look forward to further news as production advances.
